Pickleball courts now available

I fell in love with the game of pickleball about six years ago while in Sarasota, Florida. I couldn’t find any outdoor pickleball courts in this area, so three years ago, I decided to try and get dedicated outdoor pickleball courts in Clarence.

I made three presentations to the Clarence Town Board. My presentations included an explanation of pickleball, the costs associated with building pickleball courts, and also that Clarence has 22 tennis courts, 12 soccer fields, six basketball courts, 18 baseball/ softball diamonds, rollerblading and volleyball. We needed a sport that our growing senior population could play recreationally and competitively. Pickleball is a sport that could benefit all residents, young and not so young.

Today, Clarence has four beautiful, outdoor dedicated pickleball courts at the Clarence Town Place Park on Goodrich Road. The courts are very busy, as the Recreation Department has recreational and competitive pickleball on Monday and Wednesday evenings. A group plays every day at 1 p.m., a ladies group plays Thursday mornings, a high-skill-level group plays Thursday evenings, another group plays Sunday mornings, and beginner lessons and intermediate clinics are offered periodically.

The moral of my story is, if you want something in this town that we don’t have and you think it would benefit the town, go to a Town Board meeting and ask for it. I was one resident asking for pickleball, and now we have it. Personally, I would like to say “thank you” to our current Town Board. You definitely care about our town and show it in many ways. I am proud to say I live in Clarence and proud of our Town Board.
